LAA Grass Roots Fly-In (02-04 Sept 2022)

The LAA’s annual rally (this year termed a ‘Grass Roots Fly-In’) is opening its doors to fly in and drive in visitors on Friday 02, Saturday 03 and Sunday 04 September, combining many of the traditional features at a new location, having relocated this year from Sywell Aerodrome in Northamptonshire to Popham Airfield in Hampshire.

Other attractions include ‘The Apron’ aircraft park, ready to accommodate up to 300 aircraft each day. Supported by the North Weald Marshallers and the Popham Marshalling Team, the LAA confirms that they will continue their tradition of offering airside access to all visitors, providing a unique opportunity to inspect the aircraft and chat with the owners.

Hands-on activities will include a General Aviation Safety Council (GASCo) Pre-flight Masterclass, as well as an opportunity to learn or practice fabric covering skills with specialist company Aircraft Coverings, while the LAA FLea Market will meantime allow visitors to sell unwanted aircraft parts or pick up some bargains. The outside catering area will offer a selection of fast-food and beverage outlets and seating area, the LAA adds, while an evening barbeque will be provided at the Spitfire Flying Club clubhouse.

Commenting on the event, LAA Chairman Eryl Smith said: “The LAA Grass Roots Fly-In is all set to deliver our aims, a great, fun event making the most of Popham’s grass runways and its reputation as one of the most friendly and enthusiastic airfields in the country. It will offer members and guests alike a great weekend at the start of September.”
