TUI announces Pilot Cadet Programme

British airline TUI Airways has opened applications for its uniquely funded 19-month Multi-Crew Pilot Licence (MPL) cadet programme.

Upon successful completion of a four-stage course (commencing in September 2023), candidates will join TUI Airways as a Cadet Pilot (Second Officer) flying the Boeing 737.

The one-of-a-kind scheme will be fully funded (with the exception of a Class 1 medical and personal living expenses) by TUI Airways, allowing candidates who might not otherwise be able to afford the steep upfront costs associated with commercial training – currently totalling around £100,000 in the UK – the opportunity to pay nothing prior to or during training.

Instead, training costs will be recoverable via a salary sacrifice scheme that will see Cadet Pilots receive £32,867 a year (post-deduction) for a total of four years. This will also “increase inline with pilot pay scheduling agreements”.

The course will be delivered across four phases, scheduled to run consecutively. ATPL Ground School will be conducted remotely via virtual learning. Approximately 62 hours Basic Flying Training (utilizing a Robin DR401) will be delivered at Gloucestershire Airport, with a further UPRT course in a CAP10. Also delivered at this location will be Intermediate and Advanced Flying Training, consisting of approximately 270 hours in a B737 simulator, which “includes the completion of a type rating”. Finally, TUI Immersion Training will offer candidates the opportunity to learn more about the company and its values.

Committed, resilient and hard-working” applicants are invited to apply via a five stage assessment progress, with successful candidates progressing to subsequent rounds. These include a series of online assessments, a digital interview, an assessment day, an individual interview and a flying aptitude test in a light aircraft.

Candidates must be at least 18 years old on or before September 1 2023 and able to obtain a CAA issued Class 1 medical prior to commencing training. More eligibility criteria, course information, and an application link, can be found via TUI’s website.
