The Honourable Company of Air Pilots PPL scholarships open

The application window for the Honourable Company of Air Pilots 2023 scholarships is now open, with candidates invited to submit their application up until midday on Monday 13 February.

The annual scholarship scheme – something the Honourable Company of Air Pilots has offered for a number of years – aims to “assist the successful individual, who might otherwise not have the necessary resources, to achieve their License”. Typically, a number of Private Pilot License (PPL) scholarships are awarded, with ten recipients befitting from the scheme in 2022.

The award itself covers “all aspects of training up to license issue” and provides up to 45 hours of flying training at an approved UK-based flying school. It is suitable for a broad range of candidates (from those with no experience to students part-way through their PPL), subject to meeting certain selection criteria.

Alongside the ability to obtain a UK-issued Class 2 Medical certificate (something done at the candidate’s own expense), applicants must be aged at least 17 on 1 June 2023 and provide evidence of educational experience, as well as being able to “demonstrate knowledge and / or experience in science, mathematics or other aviation related subjects”.

Additionally, scholarship winners must be available to undertake and complete the entirety of their flying training this summer. A successful candidate should be “prepared to dedicate a considerable part of the summer to gaining their PPL,” notes the Honourable Company of Air Pilots, adding that the course must be completed by September 28.

Applicants with “the ability to demonstrate a serious ambition and ability to pursue an aviation related career” may complete an initial application form available on the website. This must be completed in the candidate’s own handwriting and includes a number of questions, each with a maximum word count of 50 – 100 words. If subsequently called to attend an in-person interview in London, candidates must be available on either Monday 3 or Tuesday 4 May 2023.

The Honourable Company of Air Pilots are a Livery Company of the City of London: a “philanthropic membership organisation which represents and protects the interests and welfare of pilots and navigators and strives to encourage and assist all those (from any background) who wish to become a pilot”.

Interested applicants have until 13 February to email their completed application to  [email protected]. and more information on the scheme can be found below:
