Essex & Suffolk Gliding Club seeking new home

The Essex and Suffolk Gliding Club has announced that it is looking for a new operating base after confirming that its lease expires at its current location at Wormingford Airfield, Essex in September 2026.

Posting a call-out for advice on aviation internet boards, the club which has been active since the late 1950s, said: “The Essex and Suffolk Gliding Club is currently based at Wormingford Airfield (a few miles east of Earls Colne) in Essex. It’s been our home since moving there from Whatfield in 1990.

“We have a vibrant club with over 100 active members and a recognised Junior Gliding Centre. This year some of our former and existing juniors are following their dream in aviation on apprentice schemes at Stansted Airport and some now working directly for the airlines based at the airport. We also have alumni on the BA Captain Scholarships currently developing their skills in Florida. And on the other ‘sport’ side we just had one former student following his aspirations to be a competition pilot representing the British National gliding team this summer in Poland. We are proud of all their achievements!

“In September 2026 our lease on our historic airfield will expire, and is not going to be renewed. We are looking for opportunities to hopefully lease or buy enough land (and preferably a former airfield) in Essex or Suffolk to continue our club’s operations. Any suggestions welcome, though particularly useful if they also come with contacts of owner and operators of the land. We are particularly open to mixed uses (and have had great information from Bodmin Airfield) and other sports/aviation sharing of the space.”
