Coventry headquartered Almat Flying Academy has become the latest British ATO to embrace the use of electric-powered aircraft.
Towards the end of last year, Almat took delivery of two Pipistrel Velis Electro, the first electric powered aircraft to be approved for flight training by the UK CAA. Alongside the Velis, Almat has also acquired a Pipistrel SW121, a highly efficient, MOGAS powered trainer. By combining the two aircraft, Almat is now able to offer the most environmentally responsible PPL training possible.
Commenting on the move to more sustainable flight training, Almat CEO Simon Kalas, says: “The world of flight training is entering a new era, with a small but growing movement of schools adopting innovative approaches to reduce environmental impact and embrace modern technology. At Almat Flying Academy, we’re proud to be part of this shift, introducing both the advanced Pipistrel Velis Electro and the versatile Pipistrel SW121. These aircraft represent the best of modern aviation, offering students an unparalleled training experience that combines cutting-edge technology, safety, and sustainability.”
The zero-emissions Velis Electro has a flight endurance of around 50 minutes, meaning it is suitable for training sorties in the local vicinity (including circuit training). Switching to the MOGAS-powered SW121, its 100l fuel tanks and >20ltr hourly fuel burn means it can handle the navigation element of a training programme, and that by combining the two Almat is able to offer the most environmentally responsible training package currently available. Almat adds that every electric flight undertaken at the school supports Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital through the Neboair (the British lease company for the Velis Electro) ‘Giraffes On Tour’ initiative, making a difference with every flight.
Kalas adds: “Together, the SW121 and Velis Electro provide the most sustainable path to earning your licence while equipping you with the skills to fly the aircraft of the future. For licensed PPL or LAPL holders, we also offer short differences training courses to qualify for flying these advanced aircraft. Or, if you’re curious about trying them out, book a trial flight experience today.”
FTN will be teaming up with Almat shortly to undertake a differences training course on the Velis Electro, and we look forward to reporting back about this step change in sustainable flight training.
